In natal/compatability astrology, why are some oppositions…?
Posted in astrology compatability on 08/26/2009 11:19 am by Astrology Compatibility Chart…considered to be good for synastry, while others are not? If an opposition means that they act on different wavelengths, with hardly any room for negotiation, then how can they be a good thing?
This question also goes out to squares too. Sometimes a square can be seen as a good combination too.
Can someone explain to me why this is so?
An example of a good opposition: Sun oppose Venus, Jupiter oppose Sun, Saturn oppose Jupiter. This seems to be especially true when dealing with synastry.
Thanks ahead!
Because some planets are malefic and outer.
Outer planets (that is Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) are not controllable. Therefore, it is not up to the individual to use them, so that they can reach a certain level of compromise which is usually needed in oppositions. In contrast, personal planets are….well, personal. They can be handled by the individual and even their negative contacts can form great/lasting bonds with other people.
So, while, for example, a Sun-Moon opposition in synastry would/create a feeling of intimacy (despite the negative nature of the opposition), a Sun-Pluto opposition would be much harder to handle and a lot would depend on how "personal" Pluto is in one’s chart. The more personal it is, the more important the contact with another person’s planet will be.
Then, there is also the matter of a malefic or benefic nature of the planets involved. Venus and Jupiter are always good. Saturn and Mars are not. Oppositions involving benefic planets will be good, but perhaps too much so (extravagance). Oppositions involving malefic ones will be bad and perhaps too much to handle. When a malefic and a benefic planet oppose each other, the result will be balance. (Same with conjunction. The difference is the way that balance occurs)
Based on those you have:
Sun opposing Venus (a benefic planet+ a personal one)
Jupiter opposing Sun (a benefic planet+ a personal one)
Saturn opposing Jupiter ( that’s like a tear for a smile and vice versa…you get some of both worlds- balance)
By the way, you said "with hardly any room for negotiation"….well, that’s not always the case. It is true in the case of a square, but not always in opposition. Polarity means there are things in common, they complement each other. Besides, some oppositions are rather wide and sometimes even out of sign, so they’re much weaker in terms of implacability.

Aspects to Jupiter in general are generally good. Regardless if they are in hard aspect. Typically b/c activating Jupiter in any respect brings optimism and adventure. The only difference b/w the hard aspects and the soft ones is that sometimes with hard aspects overindulgence many occur which may cause luck to run short–this is typically not a big deal.
Sun can never be opposed Venus natively. In synastry, oppositions can be good b/c they incite a bit of a chase and give of sense of an unspoken promise of something pleasing. Whether that promise is ever fulfilled is the question? It is also an opportunity for learning.
